The Ultimate Guide to Lash Lifts for Beauty Professionals
Whether you are a seasoned beauty professional or just beginning your journey in the industry, this guide to performing beautiful lash lifts will review the knowledge and skills you need to offer this popular beauty treatment confidently.
What Is a Lash Lift?
You carefully lift the client's lashes from the root using a specially formulated solution during a lash lift. This solution breaks down the bonds in the hair, allowing you to reshape and set the lashes into the desired position. The result is lashes that appear longer, fuller, and beautifully curled, creating a wide-eyed, more awake look.
A lash lift is an excellent option for clients looking for a low-maintenance solution that lasts several weeks and works on all types of lashes, including straight, short, or downward-facing lashes. Unlike lash extensions, which involve attaching synthetic lashes to natural ones, a lash lift works with the client's existing lashes.Â
The Lash Lift Procedure: Step by Step
A successful lift requires the proper preparation, skill, and lash lift supplies.
Perform a Patch Test
- Consult with your client to discuss their expectations, desired outcome, and any concerns or allergies they may have. Perform a patch test at least 24 hours before the treatment to ensure the client has no adverse reactions to the products you'll use.
Prepare the Lashes
- Start by cleansing your client's lashes and removing any traces of makeup or oils. Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser formulated explicitly for lash treatments, and make sure the lashes are completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
Place the Shields or Rods
- The next step is to place the silicone lash lift shields or rods on your client's eyelids. The desired lift and the natural lash length will determine the size and shape of the rods and shields you choose.
Apply the Lash Lifting Solution
- Coat the client's lashes thoroughly with the lifting solution. As you do so, shape and set the brows into their ideal lifted position. How long you allow the solution to process will depend on the product's instructions, the client's natural lash structure, and how gentle or intense you and the client want the final lift to be.Â
Apply the Neutralizer
- After the appropriate processing time, apply the neutralizer to the lashes to stop the chemical reaction and help set them in their lifted position. You'll leave the neutralizer on the client's lashes for the same time as you did the lifting solution.
Perform Lash Tinting (Optional)
- If the client wants a more dramatic look, this is the stage where you may choose to perform lash tinting. This will darken and enhance their lashes, providing a mascara-like effect. Allow the tint to process according to the product's instructions, then gently remove all traces of the tint.Â
Remove the Shields or Rods
- Apply a moisturizing formula to nourish and condition the lashes so they stay healthy and hydrated. Finally, carefully remove the silicone shields or rods from the client's eyelids. The moisturizing serum acts as a cleanser that will help remove the lashes from the silicone formation, the silicone formation from the eyelid, and any residue left over from the adhesive.
Safety & Precautions to Consider
By being aware of potential risks, following proper procedures, and using high-quality products, you can minimize the chances of your clients experiencing adverse reactions and ensure safe and successful lash lift experiences.
Perform a Client Consultation
Inquire about your client's known allergies, eye conditions, or sensitivities. Discuss their expected outcomes, realistic expectations, and potential risks or side effects. Answer whatever lash lift questions they might have beforehand.
Avoid Allergies
To identify potential allergies, perform a patch test at least 24 hours before the treatment. Don't perform the lash lift procedure if a client experiences an allergic reaction, such as redness, itching, or swelling.
Avoid Skin Contact
Use caution and precision when applying the solutions to avoid accidental contact with the client's eyes, which could lead to irritation or discomfort. If any product does come into contact with the eyes, immediately flush the eyes with water and seek medical attention if necessary.
Avoid Overprocessing
Follow the recommended processing times for the lash lift products to avoid leaving the lifting or neutralizing solutions on the client's lashes for too long, which could cause them to become excessively curled or damaged. Continuously monitor the client's lashes during the procedure.
Receive the Proper Training
Before performing lash lift procedures, you should have received the proper training and certification. This should encompass understanding the techniques, safety protocols, and product knowledge. Engage in continuous education and training and stay current on the latest eyelash trends.
Use Quality Products & Tools
Your products should be from reputable brands, specifically formulated for lash lifts, and meet all the necessary safety standards. Double-check that they're within their expiration date.
Hygiene & Sanitation
Properly sterilize and disinfect all tools and equipment before each use. Use disposable applicators or clean reusable ones between your clients thoroughly to prevent the spread of bacteria or infections. Finally, wear all necessary PPE to avoid prolonged contact between the formulas and your skin.
Review Aftercare
Ensure your client understands the importance of proper lash lift aftercare. For the first 24 to 48 hours, they should avoid getting their lashes wet, sleeping on their face, rubbing their eyes, and using eye makeup products.
Alternatives to Lash Lifts
While lash lifts are famous for enhancing a client's natural lashes, you must be aware of alternative treatments your clients may consider.Â
- Lash extensions involve attaching synthetic lashes to your client's natural lashes using a semi-permanent adhesive. This technique creates the appearance of longer, fuller lashes and allows for customization regarding lash length, curl, and thickness.
- Lash tinting: This procedure involves applying a semi-permanent dye to the lashes, darkening them, and providing the look of mascara without needing daily application. It's ideal for clients with lighter-colored lashes looking for more noticeable definition and volume.
- Lash serums & growth enhancers: These topical products promote lash growth, thickness, and strength. They often contain peptides, vitamins, and botanical extracts that nourish and condition the lashes.
- Mascara & lash curlers: Traditional mascara and lash curlers are tried-and-true methods for enhancing a client's lashes. Mascara coats the lashes, providing color, volume, and length. In contrast, lash curlers help you manually curl the lashes, giving them a lifted appearance.
By better understanding the general steps involved in a lash lift procedure and being aware of the proper precautions and safety considerations, you'll be better equipped to ensure a positive experience for your clients and leave them luscious lashes.
