patch testing before a brow or lash tint
Run a patch test 24 to 48 hours before a client's first tint, with the exact tint and developer you plan to use, mixed the way you will mix them on the day. Apply a small amount to a discreet area of skin as the product instructions direct, ask the client to watch it over the following days, and go ahead only if there is no reaction. Record the date, the product and the result on the client card.
the test you never skip
A tint goes on skin a few millimeters from the eye. A reaction there is harder to manage, more uncomfortable for the client, and far more visible than a reaction on an arm. The patch test finds sensitive clients before the product reaches the brow or the lash line.
It is also your record. A dated, documented test shows that you checked before the service.

when: 24 to 48 hours before
Book the patch test 24 to 48 hours ahead of the first appointment. Some reactions take time to appear, so a test done the same morning can miss them. Build the visit into your booking flow: the test appointment and the service appointment are booked together.
where to place it, and how
- Use the exact products: the same tint or hybrid stain and the same developer you will use on the day.
- Mix as you will on the day, in a clean glass cup.
- Clean the test area so no lotion or makeup sits on the skin.
- Apply a small amount to a discreet area, as the product instructions direct.
- Brief the client: what a reaction looks like, what to do, and how to reach you.
Test both lines if you offer both
A client cleared on classic tint is not cleared for a hybrid stain, and the other way around. If she might move between lines, test each one.
reading the result
| What You See | Decision |
|---|---|
| No change to the skin | Go ahead with the booked service |
| Itching, pinkness or a small red mark | No service. Note it and talk to the client about options |
| Redness, swelling or burning that spreads | No service. Refer the client to a physician |
| Swelling of the face or eyes, difficulty breathing | Emergency: call 911 |
Anything other than clear skin means no service. A mild reaction on the arm can become a stronger one near the eye.
how long a result stays valid
A clear test covers the product it was done with, for the client it was done on. Set a re-test rule in your studio policy, follow your state board's requirements, and keep it the same for every client so nobody falls through.
what cancels a previous test
- A new product line: moving from classic tint to a hybrid stain, or between hybrid lines.
- A change in the client's health: new medication, a new skin condition, pregnancy.
- Any reaction to a previous service, even a mild one.
- A long gap since her last service, as defined in your studio policy.
recording it on the client card
- The date and time of the test.
- The product line, shade and developer used.
- Where it was applied.
- The result, and who checked it.
- The client's signature, if your studio uses consent forms.
Stop, rinse, refer
If a reaction appears during the test or a service, remove the product, rinse with cool water and do not continue. Burning, swelling or spreading redness needs a physician. Swelling around the eyes or difficulty breathing is an emergency: call 911. Follow the product instructions and your state board's rules.
